I'm really torn about this review. I want to support Christian causes and people—but on the other had I don't think that "excellence" should be sacrificed in the name of doing something for God.This book is called "Tortured for Christ"—but the author admits he didn't want to share much detail about what he and others went through. So he figuratively takes a reader up to the door where they were tortured—and then to their brokenness and injuries after the fact.I wasn't particularly looking for a play by-play of what they went through—but he gave only a brief glimpse into that—and I was expecting more—both to strengthen my own faith and perhaps better equip me for what I might face in the future—since suffering is a universal promise for Christians—and we in the west might be facing the same things as we get closer and closer to Christ's return.The book was written QUICKLY—and in my opinion that is pretty obvious. Also—instead of just sharing his experience and laying out steps that we can take to help—the author was condemning at times of the western church for not being more supportive of the eastern underground church—perhaps because he felt this burden so strongly—but I found that a bit heavy handed and think he could have just presented what happened to him to open the eyes of people in the west.I understand this book has sold millions of copies and that MANY people enjoy it—it just wasn't for me.
I could say so much about this book. But for now just that when I'm feeling cranky or whiny about how difficult life is in this impoverished country called America, it's the perfect remedy to make me grateful again and give me a reality check. Stand up people.So powerful. In the right hands.
Every single person should read this book! You will no longer be bummed out that you don't make enough money, gained weight or aren't fulfilled in your life. It will inspire you to appreciate your freedom and make the most of it. It grew my faith in seeing - these people are soo sure Jesus is God they will not forsake him when given the chance to end their torture! Socialism will do this to ANYONE who does not submit to the party that takes from the people and tortures them. It's happening in Venezuela - more people should read t his book.
Oh how this account still is relevant! Eye opening yet not surprising. In Richards book Marx and Satan it revealed some of the most horrific suffering of Christians. Crucified men and women with innards removed and dead baby's sewn into the sides of those of faith in restricted nations. This inventive horror driven persecution still takes place.Bold account, driven by truth and the love of God to 'go therefore' not just in words but living it out.
Doesn't go into gory details but you hear enough that it sometimes is difficult to hear Mr. Wumbrand's story. The narrator's accent also makes this audio book more tragically real to the listener. It is not true that God only gives the suffering you can handle. We may have to suffer more than that, but the reality of Christ in a Christians does exceed the suffering that God allows.
For the christian, God is with you even in the darkest places. This book will make you weep, that men can hate the Lord (and not even know why they hate Him, Ephesians 6:12) and do such cruel things to helpless people shut up in prison. It'll also show you the power of Jesus Christ in his servants to do impossible things that no man can do in his own strength; like love and pray for your torturers. It defies the natural laws of the world and is one of the sure testimonies of the Spirit is God working to save even the foulest of men, for his own glory.
After weeks of prayer in search of what God was calling me to do, I found His answer in this story about the persecution of our brothers and sisters in Christ. At first I was angry, not understanding why the Church has to suffer when Christ already suffered for us. Through this book He showed me the purpose and about forgiveness. Because of this I know my purpose. But there is so much more. Find it for yourself. It will change you forever!
I used to hear on the radio and television Christian shows how Christians were persecuted in other Countries. And during the eighties you would hear this often. But once you read this gem of details you are fully aware of how living for Christ is a daily walk and a true sacrifice. The Word says the way to heaven is a narrow road few make it in. If these soldier for Christ did not make it in then we are all doomed. For sure people all over the world are suffering for being a Christian even in America society wants us to stifle our views and accept everything as truth. For there is a way that seems right unto a man but the way therein is death.Read this with a prayer and conviction that you will not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
